City Yoga is first and foremost a community of unique individuals who foster a safe & nurturing environment to explore the Art of Yoga: spiritual awakening, emotional growth, intellectual refinement, and physical unfolding. And through our growth individually and as a community we choose to celebrate life, to cultivate more beauty in the world, and to uplift others around us through our actions.
"Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Please be on time to class! Come 10-15 minutes early for your first class to get settled and to complete a short release form. If you arrive late to any class please be considerate of your fellow students and enter only after the initial centering (first 10 minutes or so). If you must leave a class early, try to do so before Savasana/Relaxation.
As you enter the practice studio please remove your shoes, place all belongings in the cubbies, and turn off cell phones & other electronic devices.
We recommend practicing with an empty stomach & bare feet, and encourage you to wear non-binding clothing. Avoid overly baggy clothes which hinder our ability to assist you with optimal alignment. Snug shirts, tanks, leggings, or shorts are great to wear.
There are extra yoga mats to borrow for class yet purchasing your own is encouraged. The studio also provides straps, blankets, blocks, bolsters, and eye pillows for class.
NOTE: Due to COVID-19, we will not have any props available for your use so please bring your own until further notice. Please plan to wear a mask anytime you are not on your mat. We will also practice physical distance between mats.
The benefits of practicing yoga are well documented. It is now commonly recognized that yoga is a wonderful stress reducer by the way it focuses the mind, deepens the breath and enlivens the physical body. Yoga, practiced with good alignment, is also very therapeutic and can often relieve chronic pain in the back, hips and shoulders. It reduces blood pressure and heart rate, providing wonderful cardiovascular benefits. The practice is also a good way to control weight by cultivating awareness of the mind to the body and thereby helping one make better choices, food or otherwise. The increase in flexibility is obvious but you will also become very strong…deep to the core of each muscle.
Yoga is a journey and one that is meant to be savored. If you are brand new to yoga, it is recommended that you begin at either Yoga 101, Gentle Yoga, or Basic Yoga classes. These classes move a bit more slowly than Level 2 and will introduce you to the Universal Principles of Alignment within foundational poses. Staying in this level for 8 weeks is best although not necessary. At any point you are welcome to shift levels after seeking the advice of your instructor. Gentle Yoga is appropriate for new students who wish to move even more slowly or for those who may be recovering from an injury or illness.
Yes. Due to COVID-19 capacity restrictions we will only be allowed to use our large studio space. With physical distancing, this room can hold twenty mats. Please visit our MindBody scheduler to reserve your spot before class time. There is also a waitlist. NO SHOWS will be charged the full price of class. We do suggest that you plan to arrive about 15 minutes early for your first class so you can complete a short health evaluation form, meet your instructor and get settled.
Yes, yes, yes. Yoga is not about touching your toes and you will not attain enlightenment any faster if you do. At City Yoga, we offer several levels of classes so that you can progress slowly and safely, and move at a pace that is appropriate for you. We also instruct modifications to poses as necessary and will help you use props, like blocks & straps, as well.
Please sign-in and pay at the front desk for every class. When entering the practice space please take off your shoes and turn off your cell phone or pager. You can place your personal belongings in the ‘cubbie’ space provided inside each studio. We recommend that you bring your valuables inside the studio. Collect any props that you may need and then set up your mat. Sit back and enjoy. We also have a fenced garden & deck and an interior sitting area which you are invited to use before or after any class.
You are welcome to attend any class on the schedule which is at or below your current level of practice. If you plan to attend a higher level class please speak with your instructor first for their recommendations.
Due to COVID-19 there will be no use of studio props including mats, straps, blocks or blankets. We ask that you bring you OWN PROPS and also wear a mask anytime you are not on your mat.
Please wear comfortable, non-binding clothes. We ask that you remove all footwear, including socks, so that you have better control on your mat. Overly baggy clothes are not recommended.
We encourage you to register early for weekend workshops and trainings, and you do may do so in person at the studio. Students will often travel from out of town to attend these events and signing up ahead of time guarantees your place. Payment is not required at registration unless noted. It is not necessary to register for free events like our book club.
"When I go out to get the newspaper in the early morning I stop for a minute, look up at the stars and breathe. I am so grateful for my yoga practice because it teaches me to take deep breaths and appreciate the moment."
